Great Reasons to Adopt a Shelter Dog

If you've been to the Georgia SPCA Shelter recently, you've probably seen the precious dogs we have available for adoption – from frisky, frolicking, adorable puppies to more sedate, mature dogs who are just looking for a second chance at the loving home they deserve. You already know how fabulous shelter dogs are, and how much they enrich the life of anyone lucky enough to adopt one.

But, maybe you know someone who would love to have a dog, but has some reservations about adopting one from the Georgia SPCA shelter. Here are a few reasons you can give that person to help him make a decision not to shop for a dog, but to ADOPT one:

  1. Adopting a shelter dog is often less expensive than buying one. The Georgia SPCA's adoptable dogs have already been fully vetted, vaccinated, micro-chipped and spayed/neutered – all out-of-pocket expenses you would need to budget for if you bought a dog from a pet store or breeder.

  2. When you adopt a dog from a no-kill shelter like the Georgia SPCA, you can feel good that you are saving a life – two lives, actually – the dog you adopt, and the one we can rescue because we now have another space at the Shelter.

  3. If you adopt an older dog, it will probably already be house trained and past the chewing stage! He might even know some basic commands, like “sit” and “stay.” You'll know how big he will be, and you'll be able to find a dog whose personality and energy level match yours.

  4. You'll acquire a lifetime resource for questions and help with your dog. Georgia SPCA staff and volunteers work with dogs every day, and they have a wealth of information and tips to help you. They will also be able to help you choose the right dog for you, based on your family and lifestyle. For example, they will be able to tell you whether a particular dog gets along well with other animals and children, and whether he will need lots of exercise or will be content to be a couch potato! We are more concerned about finding the RIGHT home for every dog, rather than selling one to make a profit.

  5. You'll be supporting a valuable community organization that exists solely to address the problem of pet overpopulation and find loving homes for healthy animals that would otherwise be euthanized. The Georgia SPCA makes our community a better place by mandating that their adoptable animals be spayed or neutered, reducing the number of unwanted animals In our world.

  6. By adopting a shelter dog rather than purchasing one from a pet store, you are helping to stop of the cruelty of puppy mills. There are thousands of pet-breeding facilities in the U.S. that produce dogs primarily for sale in pet stores. In these puppy mills, female dogs are forced to produce litter after litter, living in intolerable conditions, and without human love and companionship. They are destroyed when they are can no longer produce more puppies. By adopting a shelter dog, you are saying NO to puppy mills and helping, one dog at a time, to put them out of business.

  7. By your example, you will encourage people to adopt shelter dogs. When people see your amazing dog and ask where you got her, you can say, “Why, I found her at the Georgia SPCA, and you can find a great dog (or cat) there, too!”

  8. If you have children, adopting a shelter dog can help to educate them about the plight of homeless animals, and it can teach them compassion and responsibility.

And if your friend needs more than just these factual, serious reasons to adopt a shelter dog, here are a few more, gathered from people who know:

  1. You'll acquire a buddy will watch the late night movie none of your friends will watch with you.

  2. They're fine with being your “excuse” for not going to that party you didn't want to attend. (Sorry, I have to go home and feed the dog.)

  3. Your bed is pre-warmed on those cold winter nights.

  4. You'll never have to sweep crumbs from your kitchen floor again.

  5. They don't care if your socks don't match.

  6. They won't make fun of your singing, but will think you're the next VOICE.

  7. Have a problem with public speaking? Your dog will listen attentively and not judge you.

  8. They are a great alarm system.

  9. They will make you laugh.

  10. A dog – especially a shelter dog – will love you unconditionally.

  11. They will reward you with looks like this as long as you both shall live.

Seriously, your adopted shelter dog will enrich your life in ways great and small. The unconditional love of a dog can raise your spirit, chase away the blues, lower your blood pressure and give you a reason to get up in the morning, to say nothing of giving you the incentive to start exercising again. And knowing that you gave your furry friend a second chance at a loving home will make it all the sweeter.
